Uljan Baïbusynova is one of a select group of female artists who practices the art of the “jirau”. This ancient art form is characterised by a surprisingly metallic guttural sound, produced by a low singing voice. She is accompanied by authentic instruments, including the two-stringed dombra (a type of lute), the sibisgi (a wood instrument) and the kobiz (a two-stringed kind of cello). Baïbusynova continues the centuries-old oral tradition by performing worldwide and introducing young people to the secrets of jirau..
